Professor Stevens is author of a Bryn Mawr Commentary on Cicero’s Somnium Scipionis and an article on its imagery, as well as articles on the intersection of classical philosophy and literature. They include pieces on the Stoic Posidonius, the Stoic theory of preliminary passions, Vergil’s debt to Platonism and Stoicism, a chapter on Xenophon’s Socratic dialogue Oeconomicus in The Socratic Movement (Cornell 1995), and articles on Senecan tragedy, including on the use of the chorus, etymological wordplay and meta-philosophy. He is currently at work on a monograph series on ancient imitations of Plato’s Republic.

He has been a member of the UNC Language Assembly (2011-), and President of the North Carolina Classical Association (2017-19). In Spring 2004, he received the University Award for Outstanding Teaching (PDF).
