FLL Emerging Voices Hosts Emily Eyestone

Emerging Voices Presents Emily Eyestone; Fissuring the Surface: Edouard Glissant’s poetics of the concrete

Emily Eyestone presented her research at our Emerging Voices Guest Lecture yesterday, offering insightful perspectives on how disasters and urbanization influence Francophone Caribbean identities.

She explored how Gleasant’s poetry embodies opacity and subversion, challenging norms and reimagining the relationship between culture and environment. She discussed how Glissant uses language in creative ways to challenge French control over Martinique and keep his culture alive, highlighting the importance of the humanities and languages in helping people connect across cultures and protect different ways of speaking and thinking in a rapidly changing world.

Emily Eyestone is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Wake Forest University. Her research explores how geo-climatic disasters shape identity and literary expression in the Francophone Caribbean. Using interdisciplinary approaches, she examines language, history, and environmental vulnerability. Also a DJ, she integrates sound ecologies into her scholarship.
