FLL Major receives Association of North Carolina’s Jane Mitchell and Manolita Buck Honorary Scholarship

One of our Foreign Language Education majors, Mikaela Trank, has been awarded the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina’s Jane Mitchell and Manolita Buck Honorary Scholarship.

When asked about her scholarship inspiration and future, Trank said, “My inspiration comes from the people who speak the language! I was able to spend time in the Dominican Republic in 2019, and I fell in love with the children I met there. After returning home, I wanted to deepen my knowledge of Spanish and communicate more effectively with people in the Hispanic/Latino community.

From there, my love for sharing the language and culture grew. I hope to teach new generations about the languages and cultures I love and create a safe space for them to share their own. My time in Argentina was essential for this, as it allowed me to learn about a new culture and fall in love with the city of Buenos Aires. I learned how to communicate respectfully with others and navigate cultural norms. My advice for any prospective language student is to go abroad—immersing yourself in a different culture and language is the best way to learn and grow!

In my future career, I plan to provide my students with every opportunity to experience authentic cultural elements from around the world and offer them opportunities to travel virtually or in person.”
