Spanish Medical Interpreter with ECU Health visits Spanish for the Medical Professions Course

Ms. Valeria Chaires-Marin, a Spanish Medical Interpreter with ECU Health and an MA student in ECU’s Public Health program, visited Dr. Jennifer Valko’s Spanish for the Medical Professions class last week to discuss the many roles of an interpreter. Students learned how the field of medical interpreting is crucial to improving health outcomes and reducing disparities among patients with limited English proficiency in Eastern North Carolina.

Ms. Chaires-Marin’s presentation is helping to prepare students for a 20-hour shadowing experience they will complete with interpreters from the Language Access Services Department at ECU Health Medical Center.
