Global Visibilities: Between Representation and Experience in Mexico, Spain, and France.
Visibility has become an increasingly common term in everyday language, but what do we mean by it? It ranges from accusations of banality to claims of social relevance, with some viewing it as a means to bring social issues out of invisibility. Although there is no simple definition of visibility, this talk intends to reflect on the notion’s polysemy by comparatively analyzing its manifestations in commodities, politics, and drama in Mexico, Spain, and France. The talk aims to highlight how visible forms reflect on the market, the nation, and violence, and how they simultaneously reveal a common way of transforming representations of the visible into expressions of lived and often less perceptible experiences.
