ECU 40 Under 40 Leadership Awards Class of 2019
Without a doubt, Jason Sugg represents the very best that ECU offers its community: He is both a past and current student, an instructor, a volunteer, and an employee. He excels in all four areas! In 2014, Jason earned a BA Magna Cum Laude in German Studies (with a minor in History) with a GPA of 3.89. The faculty in the German Program agree that Jason’s linguistic acumen and intellectual grasp of cultural and literary concepts puts him the top 1% of our graduates. His fluency in the German language is all the more laudable as Jason learned German right here at ECU, without the benefit of studying abroad, by applying himself. Indeed, as a life-long learner, Jason has earned eight degrees and certifications, among them two Bachelors and an MA in Public Administration from Penn State. He is currently enrolled in graduate school at ECU. Since 2013, Jason also instructs officers in law enforcement techniques and firearms safety.
On the ECU campus, Jason is an indispensable and prominent staff member because he twice served year-long engagements as Interim Chief of Campus Police and has been the Deputy Chief of Police since 2013. During the thirteen years I have known Jason, I have heard numerous students, colleagues, subordinates, and community members speak highly of his personal integrity, impeccable work ethics, fairness, trustworthiness, and social awareness. These are some verbatim quotes from others: “a really great guy,” “a straight shooter,” “so honest and forthright,” “a real family man,” and “such a hard worker.”
Besides the accomplishments I outlined above, Jason supports the ECU community – his Alma mater and employer – through publicly accountable leadership in law enforcement. The policing excellence he embodies provides a sturdy foundation for ECU’s mission as an institution that is safe, helpful, trustworthy, and tolerant so that our students can pursue education, athletics, political expression, and entertainment. Jason Sugg’s ethics serves us all well.
